Breaking Free: From Learning to Doing and Building the Africa We Deserve

Introduction

I’m not here to lecture you or hand out “life advice” like I’ve figured it all out. This is just me—reflecting on my journey, my struggles, and the lessons I've learned (and unlearned) about living authentically. For years, life—education, society, and well-meaning people—have been slowly pushing me away from who I truly am. I was “smart,” aced school, and became a master at studying. But somewhere along the way, I forgot one tiny, game-changing thing: action.

The Cycle of Learning Without Doing

We’ve all been told that knowledge is power, right? Study hard, learn everything, and success will be handed to you on a silver platter. That’s the narrative, at least. But guess what? All this knowledge just piles up in your brain like a backpack full of bricks. It’s heavy, it’s useless, and if you don’t actually do something with it, it’s just a glorified storage unit for your insecurities.

I’ve written over 50 blogs. Each one a masterpiece in my head. But guess what? They’re all still sitting there, collecting dust. Why? Because I’ve convinced myself they’re not “perfect” yet. I needed to tweak them, refine them, make them sound like the next great novel. But here’s the kicker: no one’s going to read them if they stay in my notes. They’re worthless. And so am I, sitting here, waiting for the mythical “perfect moment” that will never, ever come.

The Fear of Starting

So what’s stopping us from starting? Fear of failure? Fear of judgment? Or have we just gotten too comfortable in our little bubbles? It’s way easier to daydream about success than it is to actually take the leap and risk failing. But here’s the reality check: nothing changes if nothing changes. You can’t be a dreamer and a doer at the same time. One has to win.

So here’s my challenge to myself—and to you: Let’s just start. Let’s just do it. Publish that blog. Apply for that job. Send that email. Yes, it’ll be messy. Yes, you might fail. But guess what? Failure is part of the journey. You’ll learn more from a failure than a perfect “success.” Without action, we’ll never know what works. You’ll just keep staring at your phone and waiting for the “right moment”—which, spoiler alert, will never come.

Unlearning and Relearning

Here’s the thing: to move forward, we need to unlearn all that junk they’ve taught us about perfection. We’ve been told to prioritize flawless execution and theory over doing. Well, life doesn’t care about your “perfect strategy.” Life rewards those who stumble their way through, who get their hands dirty, and who are willing to try and fail.

Unlearning is tough. It feels like someone pulled the rug out from under you, and now you’re left in a pile of confusion and discomfort. But trust me—it’s absolutely necessary if you want to do something meaningful with your life. If you’re not uncomfortable, you’re probably not growing.

Africa Needs Us to Act

And this isn’t just about personal growth. This is bigger than us. We’re the dream of our ancestors. They fought, bled, and sacrificed so we could have opportunities they never had. But what are we doing with those opportunities? Are we building the Africa they envisioned? Or are we still sitting around, too scared to take action, too hesitant to lead?

Let me break it to you: Africa doesn’t need more dreamers. It needs doers. People who will stand up, take risks, and create the change they want to see. Doesn’t matter where you come from. If you live on this continent, you’re part of its future. And that future depends on what we do today, not tomorrow.

A Call to Action

So, let’s stop being passive. Let’s take action. Publish that blog. Share that idea. Build that business. Challenge those outdated systems that are keeping us stuck. Let’s build a world where our children don’t have to fight the same battles we fought.

This is our moment. This is our time. This is our Africa. Let’s not waste it. The time to act is now, and it starts with you. Right here. Right now. So, what are you waiting for? The perfect moment? Sorry, it doesn’t exist.
